The Fit for Life Obesity Project commenced in April 2015, and has been initiated as New Zealand has the third highest rate of obesity in the OECD and is tracking to be the first. Since 2006 obesity has increased from 27% to 31%. Māori and Pacific peoples have a higher rate of obesity, 1 in 2 Māori adults are obese (48%) and 1 in 5 Māori children are obese (19%). The project will establish the current state for projects and initiatives related to obesity and healthy lifestyles across Northland.
The project will undertake a process to determine gaps and provide recommendations to Northlands Alliance Leadership Team (a collective including Northland PHO’s, Māori Health Providers and Northland DHB), on the most effective projects that should be initiated to best tackle the obesity epidemic in Northland, and to deliver endorsed projects.
