Remember The 3-Ps Rule This Summer

Northland DHB’s Public and Population Health Unit is encouraging Northlanders and those visiting the region to have fun this summer but remember the 3-Ps rule: Plan, Pack and Protect.

Northland DHB Medical Officer of Health Dr Juliet Rumball-Smith stresses the importance of taking all possible precautions towards one’s sexual health by following these guidelines.

“Socialising is all part of summer. Meeting new people and having new experiences contribute to a great holiday season - simple precautions can ensure these experiences are not unpleasant or unnecessarily stressful.

“In the heat of the moment, people can find themselves caught unprepared. It’s worth taking the time to plan ahead for all possible scenarios.”

Dr Rumball-Smith says this includes visiting your doctor, the Northland DHB 123 Sexual Health Clinic, or the nearest Family Planning clinic for a sexual health check and to stock up on condoms and/or other contraception.

“Don’t forget to ask any questions you may have - all information is confidential – and make sure you are clear on how to use your contraception,” she adds.

“We want your summer to be fun, safe and healthy - using a condom when having sex is the best way to protect yourself and others from STIs and unplanned pregnancies.”

PLAN – be prepared:

  • Plan ahead for all situations during the summer holidays.

PACK - condoms/contraception:

  • When packing your holiday bag, don’t forget to pack a good supply of condoms/contraception;
  • Pop in and visit your nearest 123 Sexual Health Clinic, Family Planning Clinic or your doctor;
  • Condoms are also available from supermarkets, pharmacists and other retailers;
  • Don’t forget, condoms are damaged when placed in the hot sun or against sharp objects.

PROTECT - from STIs and unplanned pregnancies:

  • Use a condom when having sex to protect you and others from STIs and unplanned pregnancies;
  • Follow correct instructions when taking contraceptives to ensure you protect yourself and others.
