Scam Alert

NZ Police and Northland DHB Joint Statement

Police have been made aware of scammers phoning people and claiming to be calling on behalf of or being contacted by Northland Health or Northland DHB.

Northland DHB was contacted by a concerned Kaipara resident, who quizzed the scammers about how they had obtained his contact details. He was told they were contracted by Northland DHB, advised he attend an arthritis clinic in Dargaville and also strongly encouraged him to purchase some remedies from them. The scammers also provided the complainant a telephone number 09-9849486 for validation of their business.

Northland DHB Chief Executive Dr Nick Chamberlain is advising all Northlanders to be on alert for these scammers and assures the community Northland DHB has neither contracted this group nor shared any patient details with them.

“Northland DHB, including any company acting for or contracted by them, will not request credit card details or offer products at discounted rates. If in doubt, hang up and contact your health provider.”

Whangarei/Kaipara Area Prevention Manager Senior Sergeant John Fagan says people should be wary of any unknown callers asking for money or credit card details.

People should never give their details to unverified callers.

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs has information on a variety of scams. Police encourage people to visit their website for more information on http://www.consumeraffairs.govt.nz/scams
