International Nurses Day - 12 May 2012

Florence Nightingale’s life and practice is referred to throughout the world as the pioneer of modern nursing. Annually the hard work and dedication of nurses worldwide is being honored on May 12 with International Nurses Day, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth promoting the theme ‘Closing the Gaps”.

Northland nurses are integral to health care in Northland and the Northland DHB, Manaia PHO and Te Tai Tokerau PHO are keen to acknowledge their contribution to patient care throughout the sector.

“On the 12th May throughout Northland there will be celebrations occurring to mark this annual event.  From morning teas, to wearing a sticker commemorating the role of the nurse acknowledging the work that nurses do particularly in reducing health disparities and the rates of chronic disease”, said Northland DHB Director of Nursing and Midwifery Margareth Broodkoorn.  “Nursing is an extremely diverse profession, complete with its own unique opportunities and rewards”.

Nurses make a significant contribution to improving the health and well being of Northlanders.  In April 2012 Northland celebrates the 6th Nurse Practitioner to be endorsed by the Nursing Council of New Zealand.  Margarita Bartlett joins a line up of amazing woman who have achieved this key milestone.

“It is important to acknowledge the achievements and practice of nurses throughout the Northland health sector”, Margareth said.  “Acknowledging their commitment to excellent practice and the contribution they make everyday to their communities it vital”.

This year is not just about receiving accolades and acknowledgements.  The nurses of Northland encourage people to make a contribution towards food baskets that will be donated to local food banks.

Donations of non-perishable foods can be left at the following sites until Friday 18 May:

  • Whangarei Hospital - Vibe Café
  • Kaitaia Hospital
  • Bay of Islands Hospital
  • Dargaville Hospital
