The Smokefree team works across the Northland region to implement, encourage and support initiatives that aim to reduce smoking prevalence, and the harms caused by smoking.
The team works in areas relating to smokefree environments, policy and promotion with communities, workplaces, the education sector, tobacco retailers, and licensed premises, and the provision of Smokefree information. The team also facilitates Patu Puauahi, the regions forum of organisations and workforce involved in tobacco control.
Community development, focusing on initiatives that promote smokefree lifestyles, and working to support more Māori smokers to quit, is also a component of the teams work.
The team also provides a smoking cessation service at the Whangarei Hospital, Northland health staff training and work to enhance the Northland District health Boards Smokefree policy.
The team looks forward to supporting and being a part of the national vision of an Auahi Kore Aotearoa by 2025.
