Professional Development & Recognition Programme (PDRP)

The PDRP is a professional development programme designed to recognise and reward nurses for their individual level of practice and their contribution to nursing.
Nurses are able to progress through levels by demonstrating they meet the definitions of practice for a defined PDRP level.

The PDRP framework is based on Patricia Benner’s model of Novice to Expert and recognises the development of nursing practice by identifying the progress from new graduate through to competent, proficient and expert level.
  • Northland DHB PDRP has obtained Nursing Council approval and nurses participating in the process will be excluded from APC audit.
  • The PDRP is voluntary and individuals can choose to participate at their level of practice.
  • The exceptions to voluntary participation are when submitting a portfolio is either a contractual requirement or a performance indicator in the appraisal system.
  • The Generic PDRP is based on the Nursing Council Competencies and is inclusive of recertification requirements.
  • The generic programme is available to all nurses within the Northland DHB.
  • A Mental Health Specific programme is currently being rolled out and will be presented to NCNZ for approval.
  • The mental health programme is based on NCNZ recertification requirements
