Media Releases BOI Hospital Upgrade BOI Hospital Upgrade
Friday, 11 May 2007
Work to upgrade Bay of Islands Hospital in Kawakawa is well under way, with external areas resurfaced and a one-way roading system implemented to improve access. Visitors to the hospital should be aware of the change to the road layout, and are asked to follow the signposts leading to and from the hospital. There is now one road leading to the hospital, and a second taking traffic away from the complex. Next on the list is the demolition of disused buildings on the hospital campus, including the old nurses' home. Refurbishment of the hospital interior is due to start next month, and will include painting, decorating and flooring. United Civil Construction, a civil engineering construction company based in Whangarei and Kerikeri, assisted with the speedy completion of the tarmac resurfacing by donating labour to carry out the work. The DHB is grateful for their assistance. The 20-bed hospital opened in 1913 and contains general, paediatric and maternity wards, with a total of 20 beds, and an eight-station renal dialysis unit. It provides 24-hour medical cover to the Mid North/Bay of Islands area, plus outpatient and community health services. Shirley August, Operations Manager at Bay of Islands Hospital, thanked the public for their patience and co-operation throughout the work so far, which has created some noise and disruption. There is likely to be some further disruption as internal refurbishment gets under way, but staff will work hard to minimise the effect on patients. -Ends- For further information, please contact: Clare Blackburn, Communications Manager Northland District Health Board Phone (09) 430 4101 ext 3315 |
