Bowling club goes clean and green

Tuesday, 22 May 2007
Maungakaramea Bowling Club has taken a strong “smokefree” stance, with a new bowling green and a fresh attitude. Smoking is banned not only in the club rooms, as stipulated by the Smoke-free Environments Act 1990, but the club itself has made the decision that smoking is now banned on the bowling green.

“If players wish to smoke they will be asked to go around the end of the building to the designated smoking area,” said club secretary, Judy Bloomhall.

Northland DHB’s Smokefree Coordinator, Bridget Rowse, is very pleased with the bowling club’s smokefree stance and challenges other sports grounds to do the same.

She said: “Expanding a club’s smokefree area to outdoor spaces like sports fields and grounds reduces the visibility of smoking. This de-normalises smoking, especially around children, provides support to those trying to quit and can encourage others to quit smoking.

“Making the grounds of a sport club smokefree gives a strong message that the club values the health of its members and their families. It is provides positive role modelling to younger club members and reinforces that smoking is not the norm in sport.”
