Industrial action to cause delays at Northland hospitals

Thursday, 01 April 2010

Northland DHB is warning people of delays in its emergency department as well as the postponement of some elective surgery and outpatient appointments following notice of industrial action by medical radiation technologists (MRTs).

Northland DHB has received strike notice from the Association of Professional and Executive Employees (APEX) that MRTs will begin their industrial action effective from 8am Thursday 8 April to 8am Saturday 10 April.

Clinical Services general manager, Dr Nick Chamberlain says although contingency planning is well underway to minimise disruption to patients, some patient clinics and elective surgery will be rescheduled.

The strike affects all patients needing an x-ray or scan, so we are advising people accessing our emergency departments to expect delays as those with the most urgent needs will be treated first.  .

"We are in the process of contacting patients who are directly affected by the upcoming industrial action to reschedule their appointment, as this will help us to reduce the number of patients in our hospital over the period of industrial action to ensure patient safety," said Dr Chamberlain.

Durng the strike period - any member of the pubic who is not in a life threatening situation but think they may need medical attention should contact their general practitioner or freephone Healthline on 0800 611 116 for health advice in the first instance.

"We are aware that there are members of the community who are vulnerable - so in any life threatening situation, people should always call 111," he said.

Full services are planned to return after 10 April.

Northland DHB is advertising the anticipated delays in its emergency departments as well as main stream media such as newspapers and local radio stations.

Pay negotiations are ongoing between union members and District Health Boards New Zealand (DHBNZ).
