International Midwives Day 2007

Thursday, 03 May 2007
As part of the commemorations the Northland District Health Board Midwives are taking the opportunity to celebrate the day at the Maternity Ward at Whangarei Hospital on Saturday 5 May with a shared lunch in the delivery ward. All women currently admitted will receive a special gift, a complimentary copy of the book titled "100 years of Midwifery".

The International Day of the Midwife offers the opportunity each year to celebrate midwives’ work and the profession of midwifery. This year the focus encourages midwives to ensure they are making contact with all women who need their services.

This years’ theme is Midwives reach out to women – wherever they live” - fits well with the unique quality of midwifery, which provides a continuum of care for women and their babies wherever they need it. Be it in the home, the community, the hospital - in the cities, towns and rural communities.

‘Reaching out’ is an important part of a midwife’s job, providing care relevant to their individual needs, and to aid them in overcoming other barriers like access to health facilities, affordability, linguistic or cultural differences.

Northland DHB Director of Nursing and Midwifery Denise Brewster-Webb, is delighted to have the opportunity to celebrate the Midwives of Northland and to recognize the priceless contribution they make to the community.

“What the midwives have prepared for the day further demonstrates their commitment to what they do, supporting women at such an important point of their lives. And it is such a pleasure to take the time to acknowledge their priceless efforts”
