Northland District Health Board and Plunket Northland are working together to ‘Keep Kids Safe in Cars' this summer. As part of the initiative, Child Restraint Check Clinics will be held throughout Northland to provide parents and caregivers with an opportunity to seek expert advice on suitable child restraints for their car and child, or to check that their current child restraints are installed safely. ‘Smokefree Car' gift packs will be available at each of the clinics, which include a free gift, a car sunshade, smokefree car stickers and a guide to making your home and car smokefree. ‘Keeping Kids Safe in Cars' is a collaborative initiative between Northland DHB and Plunket Northland to provide some important safety messages to parents and caregivers around Northland: · A baby needs to travel in a car seat from its very first ride. New Zealand law requires that all children under the age of five years are properly restrained in an approved child restraint appropriate for their age and weight. · Protect children and babies from the sun when travelling in a car - apply sunscreen and pop a hat on them. When using a sunshade in a car, make sure the driver's vision is not obscured. · Second-hand smoke is harmful to the health of children. Winding down a window does not eliminate the harmful poisons contained in second-hand smoke. Poisons from second-hand smoke can linger for days, weeks or even months after smoking has taken place. Plunket has 160 Car Seat Rental Schemes throughout New Zealand, providing approved car seats for hire at affordable prices. There are six Car Seat Rental Schemes available in the Northland area.
