Maori students sample hospital life

Thursday, 05 July 2007
Senior Maori students from six Northland secondary schools will visit Whangarei Hospital on Monday 9 July, as part of a national initiative to increase the number of Maori Health professionals.
Whakapiki Ake C.O.A.C.H: - Career Options After Certificate in Health Sciences - is a joint initiative between Northland District Health Board, Ministry of Health, University of Auckland and secondary schools, to inspire and encourage our local rangitahi (youth) into a health-related career.

Up to 10 year 13 Māori students from Dargaville High School, Kaitaia High School, Northland College, Whangarei Girls High School, Whangarei Boys' High School and Kamo High School will enjoy a one-day work experience at Whangarei Hospital, which will give them the chance to meet people working in the health sector and learn what's involved in different health careers.

Their Whangarei experience will be followed by two days in Auckland where they will be able to get the feel of the city and the University of Auckland.

The Whakapiki Ake C.O.A.C.H project aims to help Maori students achieve access to the University of Auckland's Certificate in Health Sciences through a comprehensive package, which covers course related cost, a work experience programme and ongoing support services.

Project Coordinator Marjorie Phillips said: "Maori are under-represented in the health sector at a time when there are specific areas of health that affect Maori. This project is geared to supporting our young people who choose a career in health".
