Media Releases Small gastroenteritis outbreak within Ward 14 at Whangarei Hospital Small gastroenteritis outbreak within Ward 14 at Whangarei Hospital
Saturday, 16 January 2010
A small viral gastroenteritis outbreak has been identified within Ward 14 at Whangarei Hospital, affecting three patients who have been isolated. Features of the illness are those of norovirus infection (predominantly vomiting and diarrhoea). The hospital expects to receive laboratory results which will confirm this next week. Ward 14 is closed to new admissions and some visitors to the ward will be required to follow strict infection control measures. Neil Beney, Northland DHB's Chronic & Complex Care general manager said this is a small outbreak which has been contained within the ward and infection control measures are in place to reduce the risk for other patients within the hospital. "If visitors from the community are experiencing any symptoms of nausea or diarrhoea, they should reconsider visiting family or friends in hospital, until they have been symptom-free for at least 48 hours", said Mr Beney. About Norovirus
• Norovirus is a very common cause of gastroenteritis in the community.
