Diabetes Service


The Diabetes Service provides specialist services to people with Diabetes.
We offer a range of Specialist Services:
  • Antenatal care,
  • Support to renal patients
  • Paediatric diabetes care
  • Pump therapy
  • Education sessions for insulin transfers, with on-going follow up of people with Type 1 Diabetes and complicated Type 2 Diabetes.
  • Diabetes Nurse Specialist for inpatient services
  • Foot ulcer clinic and vascular assessment
  • Retinal screening
  • Support for families and whanau
  • Support to health care professionals
The Diabetes Team comprises a number of specialists who work either full time or part time within the service. They include:
  • Specialist Nursing team of eight
  • Diabetologist
  • Paediatrician with a special interest in diabetes
  • Dietitian
  • Psychologist
  • Podiatrist
  • Community Support Worker - based at Bay of Islands Hospital
  • Administration staff
The team is located at the Diabetes Lifestyle Centre in Maunu Road, with nurses available at Kawakawa, Dargaville, Kaitaia and Rawene Hospitals. The multidisciplinary team also hold clinics at these venues.
The Dietitian, Podiatrist and Psychologist all offer appointments to the regional areas on a regular basis.

Our service is open to anyone who requires support or advice.


Hours: Whangarei Mon - Fri 8.00am -4.30pm
Dargaville Mon - Fri 8.00am -4.30pm
Kawakawa Mon – Thurs Fri 8.00am -4.30pm
Kaitaia Mon – Wed 8.30am – 5.00pm
