Integrated Urgent Health Care

A key project focus of the Integrated Urgent Health Care Board is same-day access to primary care.

What are we trying to do?

Engage with primary care to create a shared understanding of the current state of timeliness of access to appointments

Encourage and support general practices wishing to consider alternative approaches to appointment scheduling, acute streaming and provision of same-day care that contributes to the achievement of the NHSP Headline Target: Every Northlander with urgent health needs has same-day access to primary care.

Why is this important for community and patients?

Patients who consider they have an urgent health need want timely access to primary care, preferably with their own GP.

Early interventions to address acute needs improve outcomes for patients and their whanau.

Inability to get a same-day GP appointment has been identified as an unmet need by participants in the NZ Health Survey and as a reason for attending an Emergency Department by ED survey participants.  Availability of GP appointments is not something that is routinely measured and there are varying perceptions of the extent of the issue
