Framed Print Gifted to Bay of Islands Maternity Unit by Local Artist

Hannah Shand, is a talented fine-tip pen artist who recently donated a piece of her own artwork to the Bay of Islands Maternity Unit following her stay in 2023.

Hannah is passionate about New Zealand’s native flora and fauna, specialising in realistic pen drawings of our native birds - each artwork taking four to sixteen weeks.

The birth of their daughter was at Whangārei Hospital, with postnatal support for three days at the Bay of Islands Maternity Unit, before heading back to their home in Russell.

“As new parents, no matter how much you read or learn beforehand to prepare for a baby, there's still so much to figure out and work through when they arrive,” Hannah reflects.

The couple were glad to have decided to stay at Bay of Islands Maternity for this extra support.

“Other than getting specialist advice to assist with things like breastfeeding, my partner and I were also put at ease during the times when staff offered to hold her for some periods while we recovered from sleep deprivation,” Hannah recalls.

“My partner and I wanted to donate one of my artworks to show our gratitude to the staff. We also feel that art can make a space feel more homely, and it is a small way to bring nature indoors, which can be nice and calming.”

The framed print is titled 'Expecting' and is two pīwakawaka (fantail) on a nest. It is a special artwork for Hannah because she drew it while pregnant and hopes that other new or expecting parents can also feel a connection with it.

Hannah was overjoyed with the reaction from the staff, who all loved the artwork.

“We had a lovely morning tea and it was great to catch up with the team and my midwife, and for them to see how well our daughter is doing,” she smiles.

“We hung the artwork in the maternity ward entrance, and I'm so happy to have been able to see everyone and show my appreciation for the great work that they do.”

Hannah says that their experience in the maternity unit was fantastic.

“We were super pleased with the level of care we received during our stay. The staff made us feel comfortable, safe, informed, and supported, throughout our entire stay.”

Hannah actively works with conservation groups and bird sanctuaries to fundraise and spread awareness of their crucial work. Combining her passions with her love for the outdoors and photography, Hannah explores bird sanctuaries and remote predator-free islands, and draws inspiration from her wildlife encounters.
