Nursing & Midwifery

Northland DHB has approximately 1200 nurses and midwives (90% registered) working in a variety of roles across the hospital and community settings. Nursing and midwifery constitutes around 48% of the Northland DHB workforce.

Nurses and midwives work independently, interdependently and collaboratively with other members of the health care team and in partnership with Maori to provide the best possible health care for the community we serve.

The nursing service at Northland DHB comprises many levels and roles designed to meet service delivery needs relative to the consumer group. The development and scope of nursing practise is continuing to evolve to meet changing consumer needs and innovative approaches to service delivery.

As an integral part of our team, you can look forward to ongoing support for your professional development. Nurses wanting to undertake postgraduate certificates, diplomas and masters studies have the opportunity to apply for funding to support course fees, subsidised travel and accommodation and some study days.

Each ward and unit department provides an orientation programme for new starters and preceptorship support. This is further supported by unit based in-service education. Nurses and midwives also have the opportunity to participate in an approved professional development programme.

Clinically based nurse/midwife educators are also available in areas to provide coaching, guidance and support to staff at point of care. Northland also has a range of Clinical Nurse Specialists working in areas such as Pain Management, Stomal Therapy, Renal, Cardiac Rehabilitation, Diabetes, Infection Control, Gerontology, Child Protection and Occupational Health to provide expert support to both patients and nurses.

Comprehensive programmes for newly registered nurse are also available in general services and mental health.
